Nearly nine years after leaving for Texas A&M, former coach Jimbo Fisher has emerged as a rumored candidate to return to Florida State following the firing of Mike Norvell. Fisher previously enjoyed a dominant run with the Seminoles, posting an 83-23 record with three ACC titles and the 2013 national championship before the program fell into disarray under subsequent coaches.
The Pros of Hiring Jimbo Fisher
Fisher boasts deep familiarity with Florida State, having worked under Bobby Bowden and built a powerhouse operation that would immediately command major booster support and financial backing. Because Texas A&M owes him roughly $7 million annually until 2031 with zero offset mitigation, Fisher could accept a low-end ACC salary and direct significantly more funds toward the staff and roster. Furthermore, Fisher is a consistent winner with a career record of 128-48 across 14 seasons, finishing below .500 only twice.
The Cons and Major Concerns
Despite his recruiting success, Fisher’s tenure at Texas A&M struggled significantly in deploying talent, largely due to a complex offense dependent on quarterback development that has grown outdated in modern college football. Fisher also brings a history of stubbornness, having long refused to hire an offensive coordinator at Texas A&M until the team missed a bowl game. Additionally, questions remain about his ability to construct an elite offensive line, a developmental issue that plagued the end of his first stint in Tallahassee and subsequent eras.
While Fisher would unify boosters and offer financial flexibility following Norvell’s massive buyout, his recent offensive struggles and the program’s current disadvantages present significant risks for the administration in Tallahassee.
