Manchester United will give Michael Carrick another opportunity to prove himself at Old Trafford after deciding against dismissing him ahead of Saturday’s match against Chelsea. Club officials spent two days evaluating Carrick’s position following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, but ultimately chose to keep him in charge for the trip to Stamford Bridge, as reported by 101 Great Goals.
Recent Struggles and Poor Form
The decision comes as a surprise because the Bournemouth fixture was widely viewed as Carrick’s final chance, following a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como just five days prior. Against Bournemouth, United delivered another lifeless display that could have resulted in a heavier defeat, leaving the club fifth from the bottom in the Premier League with only seven points gathered from eight matches.
Carrick has overseen the worst top-flight start for United in 40 years and the worst of the Premier League era. The team travels to face Chelsea carrying an eight-game winless streak across all competitions, having also exited the EFL Cup in the third round after squandering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Squad Challenges and Potential Replacements
Carrick returned to the Carrington training ground to observe an Under-21 match against Hull behind closed doors and led standard training sessions. His continuation follows an apparent emotional farewell to supporters after the Bournemouth match, where fans chanted his name while directing their frustration at the players.
Ahead of the Chelsea fixture, Carrick faces a major choice regarding captain Bruno Fernandes, who started on the bench against Bournemouth after questioning the manager’s tactics following the Como defeat. Despite United’s struggles, Fernandes was left on the bench as Carrick opted for substitutions like Joshua Zirkzee and Shea Lacey, though leaving the reigning PFA Player of the Year out of the starting lineup again appears unlikely.
Should the match against Xabi Alonso’s side end in defeat, United might feel compelled to make a managerial change, despite potential successors appearing largely uninspiring. Potential candidates include Eddie Howe, who secured one EFL Cup title at Newcastle United, alongside Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann.
