Cardiff Met’s Under-19 team has created history by becoming the first Welsh club to advance to the second round of the UEFA Youth League Domestic Champions Path. The Students secured their milestone achievement by defeating Luxembourg’s UNA Strassen 4-1 on aggregate, following a commanding 4-0 victory in the first leg at Cyncoed Stadium.

Facing European Giants

The landmark victory has set up a second-round showdown against Norwegian side Stabaek, with the first leg taking place in Oslo on Wednesday. As reported by BBC Sport, Cardiff Met director of football Dr Chris Baker expressed immense pride during the draw ceremony in Geneva, where the team joined elite academies and former Champions League winners such as Chelsea and Benfica.

Baker noted that the squad understands they will face long periods of pressure against Stabaek as clear underdogs. However, he emphasized that the players have previously proven their discipline and ability to execute a game plan against quality opponents, with hopes of bringing another memorable European occasion back to Cardiff.

Balancing Studies and Elite Football

Juggling the historic European campaign with academic commitments has been a significant challenge for the squad. Tomos Lloyd, who is studying for a sports performance analysis degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University, featured in both legs against UNA Strassen and described the experience as surreal in front of the largest crowd he has played in front of.

Lloyd explained to BBC Sport that managing the football commitments alongside missing 10 hours of lectures required strong backing from university staff and tutors. He praised the full support system provided by the institution’s full-time performance service team and personal tutors, which helps student-athletes catch up on their academic work.

Building for the Future

Cardiff Met’s recent success reflects years of development behind the scenes, following the senior team’s appearance in the 2019-20 Europa League preliminary round. Baker highlighted that the academy has transformed significantly from a time when it struggled to field teams consistently on weekends.

As one of only five Category A academies in Wales, the club focuses on a distinctive dual-career model that supports players in securing professional contracts while starting academic journeys. Baker concluded that sustaining this success over multiple years will require greater investment, increased visibility, and heightened standards across domestic leagues.
