Linfield Go Top After Dominant 3-0 Victory Over Coleraine

Linfield moved to the top of the Irish Premiership table after securing a convincing 3-0 win over fellow title contenders Coleraine at Windsor Park. The victory extended Linfield’s unbeaten league run to 14 matches as David Healy’s side continues their campaign for a 58th Gibson Cup title.

Clinical Attack and Decisive Moments

Rhys Brennan broke the deadlock shortly before half-time with a lofted finish, marking his third goal in his past four appearances. Brennan, who joined on loan from Bohemians, praised the collective effort following the match.

“It was unbelievable and a massive result and the most important thing is the three points,” Brennan told BBC Sport NI.

The winger emphasized the significance of securing maximum points against a key rival on home ground.

“The goal is nice for me, but for the team it was massive. We were all over them at their home ground, so we had to make a statement and do it in our home ground, so we are buzzing,” Brennan told BBC Sport NI. “This was the best move I could have picked, this is a massive club and I love it and I am enjoying myself which is all that matters now.”

Linfield capitalized on a Coleraine mistake seven minutes into the second half to double their lead. After Ben Wylie failed to pass to Ben Doherty on an attack, the Blues launched a fast counter-attack that resulted in Adam Frizzell scoring in the 52nd minute. Coleraine responded immediately by making four substitutions, but Kitt Nelson later added a solo goal to complete the 3-0 victory, prompting a rare animated touchline celebration from manager Healy.

Defensive Solidity and Title Race

The result marked Linfield’s second victory over Coleraine this season and highlighted their defensive discipline. Prior to the match, Coleraine had scored 32 goals in 15 league fixtures, but Linfield restricted them from recording any shots on target during the second half. A defensive unit featuring Ben Hall and Isaac Baird, who converted from midfield to centre-back this season, limited chances for Coleraine attackers Joel Cooper and Matthew Shevlin.

Linfield has conceded 11 goals through their opening 15 league matches, giving them the joint-fewest goals allowed in the Irish Premiership. By comparison, Coleraine has conceded five more goals than Linfield, while title rivals Larne have also suffered defensive setbacks.

Following an opening-day 3-0 home defeat to Ballymena United, Linfield has built a 14-game unbeaten streak. Speaking to BBC Sport NI, football analyst Paul Leeman noted that Healy’s squad has firmly established their title credentials.

“Linfield will certainly not go under the radar now,” Leeman told BBC Sport NI. “They have shown their quality tonight, they maybe do not have the strength and depth of the teams around them, but they certainly have the quality in the first 14 players. It is tremendous from Linfield, and they are now becoming the team to beat.”
