Kansas City Current earned a spot in the NWSL semifinals on Saturday after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Angel City in extra time at CPKC Stadium. Forward Michelle Cooper scored the match-winning penalty kick early in the extra period, ending Angel City’s 10-game unbeaten streak and extending Kansas City’s home unbeaten run to 16 matches.
Defensive Battle in Regulation
Although both clubs finished the 2026 regular season tied for the league lead with 54 goals each, the quarterfinal matchup quickly transformed into a tight defensive contest as reported by CBS Sports. Goalkeepers on both sides delivered critical plays to keep the game scoreless through 90 minutes.
Kansas City threatened early in the first half when Haley Hopkins, Temwa Chawinga, and Cooper combined on an attack that ended with a header saved by Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson. Shortly afterward, Kansas City goalkeeper Lorena was called into action to deny an Angel City scoring attempt. Anderson later made another crucial stop during regulation stoppage time to send the match into extra time.
Current center back Gabrielle Robinson highlighted the team’s defensive efforts after the match. “It was definitely a team effort. They played a lot of long balls, so winning the second ball was key for us,” Robinson said. “I think our sixes, our front line, was coming back and winning those second balls. But for us, is winning the first one, winning the second, and then turning around and going from there [were keys]. And I thought we were really good with that today.”
Extra-Time Penalty Decides the Match
The decisive moment arrived five minutes into extra time following a set piece delivered by Izzy Rodriguez. Amid physical positioning between Angel City midfielder Ary Borges and Kansas City center back Kayla Sharples, the referee awarded a penalty against Anderson for a pushing foul, which Cooper successfully converted.
Kansas City manager Chris Armas clarified after the game that Cooper was scheduled to take extra-time penalties, even though team captain Lo’eau LaBonta usually serves as the primary taker. “[LaBonta] has scored so many in her career. Understands what it feels like at the spot. And even in those moments when she grabs the ball, you know she’s maybe protecting Coop in that moment to then hand it off to her. I don’t even know if they’ve had a discussion, but if they did and it went back to Lo, I would trust that she could take it. But this was something ahead of time. We knew Coop would take it, and she buried it,” Armas explained.
For Cooper, who missed last year’s playoff elimination due to a lingering foot injury, the goal provided a pivotal moment. “I always want to contribute and help my teammates when I can. So, it was, like, really shitty last year when I got injured, literally right before. But it’s part of the game, and I think I supported them the best I could last year. To be able to actually impact the game in a way of scoring a goal in the PK, and converting, it’s felt really good. But I think, I can’t celebrate yet. We still have two more games to go, one game guaranteed next weekend, and that’s honestly the biggest focus for me,” Cooper said.
Angel City’s Postseason Run Concludes
The defeat concluded a remarkable midseason turnaround for Angel City under interim head coach Leif Gunnar Smerud, who took charge after the team parted ways with former manager Alexander Straus. Angel City had strengthened its lineup during the season by acquiring Ally Sentnor from Kansas City and integrating defender Savy King at right back following her recovery from injury, alongside center backs Sarah Gorden and Emily Sams, and left back Evelyn Shores.
Armas praised Angel City’s performance during his postgame remarks. “Listen, I don’t always take the opportunity to make an opening statement here, but I did this time because I want to congratulate Angel City on a great season. And it’s a shame that one of us on the day was not going to move on. But they’re a tough team. They were hard to play against for sure. They gave us everything, and I think we gave them everything,” Armas stated.
Kansas City Current will now advance to the NWSL semifinals scheduled for Nov. 14 and 15, where they will play the winner of the quarterfinal between Gotham FC and Seattle Reign.
