Lightning Teammates React to Kucherov Trade Request

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov returned to the ice on Saturday, Oct. 31, setting up his team’s first three goals shortly after informing teammates of his request to be traded. Despite Kucherov’s performance giving Tampa Bay an initial 3-2 advantage against the Nashville Predators, Nashville mounted a comeback to win 5-4 in a shootout.

Teammates and Coach Address the Situation

Kucherov did not speak with reporters following the game, but his teammates and coaching staff reflected on the news. Lightning captain Victor Hedman described the atmosphere by stating, “It was a tough day.”

Forward Brayden Point emphasized focusing on the present rather than future uncertainty. Point noted that Kucherov remains committed on the ice, saying, “He’s going to play hard and we can’t look into the future.” He added, “Right now, he’s a Bolt,” before noting, “That’s his business. He’s my teammate. He’s my friend. That’s how I’ll treat him.”

Defenseman John Carlson admitted the announcement caught the locker room off guard. “I think it was surprising to everyone,” Carlson said. However, he maintained that the situation would not become a distraction during games. “Once you get on the ice, there’s only so many things you can worry about,” he explained, adding, “I think we’re focused on what I can do on the ice.”

Lightning head coach Jon Cooper praised the reigning league MVP’s effort during the shootout loss. Cooper stated, “He’s a proud Bolt and he came in tonight to help us win a hockey game as he’s done his whole career here and he gave us a hell of a chance. It’s too bad we couldn’t pull that one out.”

Contract Details and Front Office Stance

Kucherov is currently in the final year of a contract carrying a $9.5 million salary cap hit. The trade request followed contract extension negotiations, after which the team was informed that the franchise’s all-time leading scorer would not sign a new deal. According to PuckPedia, Kucherov holds a modified trade clause requiring him to submit a list of 10 acceptable destinations.

Despite the request, Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois announced in a statement on Oct. 30 that the organization “unequivocally” has no intention to trade the two-time Stanley Cup winner.

While other NHL players have recently chosen to sit out during trade negotiations—such as Connor Hellebuyck prior to his trade to the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin on Oct. 29—Kucherov plans to continue playing. When NHL insider Pierre LeBrun questioned on social media whether Kucherov might eventually sit out to apply pressure, agent Dan Milstein responded that such a scenario was “Unlikely.”

Meanwhile, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Larkin’s representatives could potentially modify his own 10-team trade list, which reportedly includes the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Utah Mammoth, Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, and Carolina Hurricanes.
