The Colorado Avalanche earned a decisive 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Halloween night, powered by a multi-goal performance from Artturi Lehkonen and a four-assist effort from defenseman Cale Makar. The victory at home marked another strong offensive display for Colorado’s key stars.
Colorado Builds Early Advantage
Colorado established pressure early in the opening period, eventually breaking through with just over five minutes remaining. Forward Nathan MacKinnon gathered a loose rebound on the left side and beat Calgary goaltender Arsenii Sergeev off the post to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. Sergeev was making his second career start in the NHL for the Flames. At the other end of the ice, Avalanche netminder Mackenzie Blackwood protected the lead by stopping a late scoring attempt from Matt Coronato with eight seconds left in the period.
The Avalanche expanded their lead during the second period. On an early power play, Martin Nečas converted from the left circle to double Colorado’s advantage. Soon after, Lehkonen scored his 11th goal of the season, followed quickly by a strike from Brock Nelson to put the Avalanche ahead 4-0. Calgary answered late in the period when Joel Farabee executed a spin move near the crease to get the Flames on the board. During the period, Nelson briefly left after being struck in the head by a shot from teammate Makar, though he returned for the final frame.
Closing Out the Victory
Calgary cut into the deficit early in the third period following a turnover by Colorado’s Brent Burns behind the net, which allowed Martin Pospisil to score and make it 4-2. However, Colorado restored its three-goal cushion just two minutes later when Lehkonen deflected a shot from Makar into the net for his second goal of the game and 12th of the season.
Late in the game, Calgary’s Fedor Svechkov was forced to leave the ice after taking a hit to the face, resulting in a four-minute power play for Colorado. Although the Avalanche were unable to capitalize on the advantage, they controlled the remaining time to seal the 5-2 victory.
Key Performances and Next Game
Lehkonen’s two-goal night brought his season total to 12 goals through 14 games. Meanwhile, Makar set a season high with his four-assist performance. The star defenseman now has 15 points on the season, with nearly half of that production coming in matchups against Calgary.
The Avalanche now head out on a short back-to-back road trip. Colorado will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday, November 2, with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. MT.
