The Colorado Avalanche built an early four-goal advantage to defeat the Calgary Flames 5-2 on Saturday night in Colorado. Calgary entered the second game of a back-to-back set following a 6-2 victory against the Seattle Kraken, having won six of its previous eight contests before the loss.
Colorado Builds Commandive Early Advantage
Calgary turned to recently recalled goaltender Arsenii Sergeev in net, but Colorado’s offense generated early pressure. Nathan MacKinnon scored the opening goal at 14:13 of the first period, picking up a loose puck in the high slot and beating Sergeev high to make it 1-0.
The Avalanche extended their lead early in the second period on a power play at the 2:37 mark. MacKinnon passed to former Flame Nazem Kadri, who sent a cross-seam feed to Martin Necas for a one-timer past Sergeev. Just over three minutes later, Cale Makar moved past a Calgary defender before finding Artturi Lehkonen, who scored to widen the gap to 3-0. Colorado added a fourth goal on a two-on-one rush when Gabriel Landeskog set up Brock Nelson, who batted the puck out of the air into the net.
Calgary Rally Cut Short
Calgary got on the scoreboard before the second period concluded. Mikael Backlund won a puck battle along the boards and passed to Joel Farabee, who controlled the puck and beat Avalanche netminder Mackenzie Blackwood to make it 4-1.
The Flames pushed closer early in the third period when Martin Pospisil forced a turnover on Ryan Strome during a forecheck and finished past Blackwood to reduce the deficit to 4-2. However, Colorado quickly halted Calgary’s comeback attempt when Makar sent a shot toward the net that Lehkonen redirected past Sergeev for his second goal of the evening, bringing the score to the 5-2 final.
Key Performances and Milestones
Farabee’s goal kept up his strong offensive stretch for Calgary, giving him 12 points—consisting of five goals and seven assists—over his past seven appearances. Flames forward Morgan Frost also moved closer to a personal milestone, sitting one point away from reaching 200 career NHL points.
On the Colorado side, Calgary-born defenseman Makar recorded four assists, while Kadri chipped in an assist against his former club to help secure the victory.
