Avalanche Beat Flames 5-2 Behind Makar and Lehkonen

The Colorado Avalanche secured a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night in Denver, propelled by a two-goal performance from Artturi Lehkonen and four assists from defenseman Cale Makar.

Offensive Surge in the Second Period

Nathan MacKinnon contributed a goal and an assist, while Martin Necas and Brock Nelson also scored for Colorado. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood turned aside 25 shots to help preserve the victory.

Colorado opened the scoring late in the first period on MacKinnon’s tally. Blackwood protected the early edge by making a sprawling glove stop against Matt Coronato with 8.5 seconds remaining in the frame, followed by another key denial against Joel Farabee 12 seconds into the middle period.

The Avalanche took control during the opening ten minutes of the second period, stringing together three unanswered goals to build a 4-0 advantage. Nelson capped the flurry before briefly exiting the game after taking a shot by Makar off the side of his helmet. He skated off toward the locker room but was able to return for the final period.

Flames Push Back Before Lehkonen Seals Win

Calgary answered 1:43 after Nelson’s goal when Farabee got the visitors on the scoreboard. Martin Pospisil trimmed the deficit to 4-2 just 1:59 into the third period, but Lehkonen halted the rally at 4:09 by deflecting Makar’s point drive into the net.

Arsenii Sergeev finished with 29 saves in Calgary’s net during his season debut and second career NHL start. The Flames recalled the third-string goaltender from the AHL after placing Devin Cooley on the injured list due to a lower-body issue. Calgary was playing less than 24 hours after earning a win over the Seattle Kraken.

The outcome gave Colorado its second straight win over a team finishing a back-to-back schedule, following a victory against New Jersey on Wednesday. The Avalanche did not commit a single penalty in the contest, while Calgary was whistled three times, including a late double minor in the third. Colorado played without defenseman Josh Manson, who is sidelined for an estimated two months due to an ankle injury sustained against the Devils.

Both teams continue their schedules on Monday night, with Calgary visiting the San Jose Sharks and Colorado traveling to play the Chicago Blackhawks.
