Julian Erosa Reflects on His Turbulent UFC Career

Julian Erosa wrapped up his mixed martial arts career with a victory rather than a championship belt, a rare feat in the sport. The 37-year-old featherweight retired this past Saturday after securing a first-round knockout win over Jeong Yeong Lee at UFC Fight Night 292 in Las Vegas, finishing his overall record at 31-13 and his promotional mark at 9-9.

A Career Defined by Perseverance

The thrilling win mirrored Erosa’s entire career style, as he overcame early trouble after getting badly hurt in the opening exchange before putting Lee away just seconds later. Erosa told MMA Junkie Radio that his journey represents resilience and redemption. He pointed to past moments where he bounced back from difficult losses in specific arenas, such as returning to the T-Mobile Arena to beat Hakeem Dawodu after previously suffering a knockout loss by Teruto Ishihara at the MGM.

Erosa also noted that his victory over Lee erased a personal 0-2 career record against Asian fighters, providing another layer of redemption for his final walk to the octagon. Achieving a statement win to close his chapter allowed him to step away from the sport with complete satisfaction.

Overcoming Cuts and Protecting Loved Ones

Throughout his time in the organization, Erosa accomplished the rare feat of being cut twice—first in 2016 and again in 2019—and successfully fighting his way back onto the roster both times. While he acknowledged that getting knocked out comes with the territory of fighting, his primary motivation for retiring on a high note was his family. Watching his mother, wife, and friends witness him suffer knockouts during a prior three-fight losing streak weighed heavily on him, prompting him to preserve his health and leave them with a positive final memory.

Another key factor in his retirement decision was observing fellow fighter Darren Elkins. Erosa explained that he wanted to proactively retire on his own terms rather than letting the sport force him out later, pointing out that fighters often struggle when they delay hanging up the gloves.

Erosa officially leaves the sport satisfied with his health intact and a final victory secured under the bright lights in Las Vegas.
