UFC analyst Chris Weidman believes the competitive drive in lightweight champion Justin Gaethje will lead him to select Arman Tsarukyan as his next opponent, as reported by sports.yahoo.com.
The Case for Arman Tsarukyan
Gaethje holds a 28-5 MMA record with an 11-5 UFC standing after defeating Ilia Topuria to capture the title at UFC Freedom 250. While Tsarukyan stands as the undisputed top contender with a 24-3 MMA record and an 11-2 UFC mark, UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has also proposed a double retirement bout against the lightweight titleholder.
Despite Volkanovski holding a more decorated resume at 29-4 MMA and 16-3 UFC, Weidman argued on “Deep Waters” that the heavy underdog status against Tsarukyan serves as a major motivator for Gaethje. Opening as roughly a 3-1 underdog in the betting odds, Weidman stated that Gaethje thrives on silencing doubters who count him out.
Weidman explained that Gaethje does not fear defeat and would likely prefer the greater financial compensation that comes with facing Tsarukyan rather than Volkanovski. Negotiations regarding compensation are currently keeping the champion’s next steps under wraps.
Future Plans and Retirement Thoughts
Gaethje has previously contemplated retirement following his championship victory over Topuria. The lightweight titleholder has not yet responded to Volkanovski’s public challenge or officially announced his return date.
Following his stoppage win over Topuria, Gaethje stated his intention to take a well-deserved break from competition before deciding whether to step back into the Octagon.
