The Major League Baseball offseason is moving quickly just over a week into free agency, with significant movement surrounding top starting pitchers, international hitters, and early contract extensions.

Tarik Skubal Attracts Early Free-Agent Interest

The market for two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal is already generating major traction, according to the New York Post. Regarded as the top free agent on the market, Skubal is expected to sign a deal during November before the current collective bargaining agreement expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1. Although an agreement is not immediate, negotiations have officially commenced.

Skubal’s impending deal is projected to set new records for total contract value among pitchers, potentially surpassing the $325 million contract Yoshinobu Yamamoto received from the Los Angeles Dodgers. His upcoming deal could also compete with the record average annual salary of $43.3 million previously secured by Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander with the New York Mets.

Major Market Contenders Eye Teruaki Sato

Japanese slugger Teruaki Sato has drawn interest from several prominent franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Yankees, as reported by the New York Post. CBS Sports listed Sato as the fourth-ranked overall free agent this winter and the top position player available.

Unless MLB and the MLBPA avoid a potential lockout, Sato must finalize an agreement prior to the Dec. 1 deadline. If no deal is reached, he will return to Japan to play for the Hanshin Tigers in 2027. Sato offers substantial raw power, drawing comparisons to Munetaka Murakami, who posted 35 home runs in 127 rookie games this past season despite high strikeout numbers and defensive questions at third base.

Nationals Secure Jacob Young with Multi-Year Deal

The Washington Nationals have finalized a four-year, $23 million contract extension with center fielder Jacob Young, according to FanSided. The agreement features an $8 million team option for a fifth season. The deal covers Young’s three arbitration-eligible years and one year of free agency, with the option extending team control through 2031.

Young, 27, built upon his elite defensive reputation by making significant offensive gains in the second half of the season, batting .301 with a .385 on-base percentage. Previously considered a potential trade chip, the extension secures his place in Washington’s core roster going forward.
