Mercedes driver George Russell has admitted he is mentally exhausted following a 2026 Formula 1 season marked by persistent challenges. Entering the year as the title favourite, Russell watched his teammate Kimi Antonelli claim the world championship in Mexico after a series of issues disrupted his campaign.
Overcoming Repeated Setbacks
Speaking to the media at Interlagos, Russell noted that arriving in Brazil—the site of his maiden Formula 1 victory in 2022—failed to lift his spirits. He described the persistent cycle of recovering from setbacks throughout the year as exceptionally draining.
“As I said, I probably just feel a bit exhausted this season of constantly picking myself back up,” he stated. “When you get kicked to the ground, you pick yourself back up, then you get kicked down again, you pick yourself back up and I was hoping to do that maybe twice in the season not every other weekend, really.”
The British driver explained that enduring lengthy road trips compounded the difficulty of handling race outcomes beyond his control, such as in Mexico where potential podium or victory finishes vanished unexpectedly. “So Brazil was a place that I love. I’ve got great memories. Do I come in with high expectations? Honestly, no. But looking forward to next year, for sure,” he added.
Investigating Recurring Issues
Following the race in Mexico, Russell and his engineering team reviewed the entire season and discovered that only six rounds had proceeded without issues. He emphasized that the team must investigate the root causes behind the frequent complications affecting his side of the garage.
“14 of those races, we’ve had things that have been what we thought was bad luck,” he remarked. “But we need to start questioning things more deeply when it’s happening so often, and especially on our side.”
Russell holds fourth place in the drivers’ standings with 250 points, trailing Lewis Hamilton in third with 259 points and Max Verstappen in second with 261 points.
