Cody Bellinger has added a prestigious Platinum Glove to his second career Gold Glove for his stellar defensive work in left field during the 2026 season. Rawlings presents the Platinum Glove annually to the top defender in each league, making Bellinger only the second Yankees player to win the award following catcher Jose Trevino in 2022.
Yankees Seek Offensive Upgrades for 2027
As reported by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, the 2026 Yankees relied heavily on elite pitching while suffering from lackluster bats, creating a clear need for offensive upgrades in the 2027 postseason push. Hoch highlights third base as the most pressing position to address following a poor offensive performance by Ryan McMahon last year. Free agent NPB slugger Teruaki Sato presents an intriguing option for the hot corner, though questions remain about his defensive capabilities and the team’s willingness to pursue NPB talent.
FanGraphs lead prospect analyst Eric Longenhagen evaluated Sato, the 2026 Central League Triple Crown winner, describing him as a player who will strike out frequently and play below-average defense but still project as a productive heart-of-the-order power hitter capable of hitting 25 to 30 home runs. Longenhagen also identified another potential Japanese target in second baseman Shugo Maki of the Yokohama BayStars, who expressed a desire to play in the United States last offseason.
Longenhagen projects Maki as an everyday second baseman comparable to Brandon Lowe, noting that Maki’s superior hit-tool stability makes him a strong prospect compared to Sato, who carries a high fastball miss rate.
Front Office Support and Coaching Departures
NJ.com’s Bob Klapisch reported on fan frustration directed at general manager Brian Cashman following another early postseason exit. However, former Athletics general manager Billy Beane defended Cashman, praising his overall body of work and calling him one of the best to ever hold the job.
In coaching staff updates, the Yankees are losing catching instructor Tanner Swanson after his contract expired, as reported by Madison. Swanson, who joined the team from the Twins in 2020, developed Jose Trevino into a Platinum Glove winner and helped turn Austin Wells into a Gold Glove finalist in 2026. Swanson is returning to his native Pacific Northwest to become the bench coach for the Seattle Mariners under new skipper Jason Kanzler.
