Harry Kane has become the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001 after being crowned the world’s best player at a ceremony in London. The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker is the fifth Englishman to win the prestigious award, joining Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, and two-time winner Kevin Keegan.
Record-Breaking Season and Individual Brilliance
Kane secured the honor despite not lifting either of football’s biggest prizes last season, having experienced semi-final exits in both the World Cup and the Champions League. Real Madrid and France forward Kylian Mbappe finished second in the voting, while Barcelona and Spain attacker Lamine Yamal took third place. Notably, the England captain is also the first Bayern player to claim the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Reflecting on his journey, Kane told Dazn that many people would not have predicted his success early on. He noted that he had to navigate numerous ups and downs, relying on self-belief, hard work, and determination to push through the mental challenges of his early career.
Tributes poured in following the announcement, with England manager Thomas Tuchel expressing his delight at the huge honor. Prince William also praised the former Tottenham Hotspur player as a remarkable athlete and a brilliant captain. To mark the occasion, the Wembley arches were illuminated in gold on Monday night.
Kane’s success was driven by an unmatched individual output last term, featuring 61 goals in 51 club matches—the highest single-season tally in Bayern’s history. Across all competitions, including international fixtures for England, he amassed 73 goals and eight assists in 65 appearances. His club total included 36 goals in the Bundesliga, 14 in the Champions League, 10 in the German Cup, and one in the German Super Cup. Former England striker Alan Shearer told BBC Sport that Kane’s sensational numbers made him the rightful winner, while former teammate Danny Murphy described his goalscoring as relentless and brilliant.
Challenging Trends and Future Prospects
Kane’s victory bucks a recent trend in Ballon d’Or voting. This marks only the fifth time in the past 20 years that the award has gone to a player who did not win the World Cup, Champions League, European Championship, or Copa America that year, following previous wins by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Looking ahead to next year, Kane has already started the new campaign strongly with 16 goals in 16 matches for club and country. However, competition remains fierce. Lamine Yamal has begun the season in impressive form for Barcelona, while Kylian Mbappe continues to perform strongly for Real Madrid as both players eye future Ballon d’Or success.
