Manchester United are set to miss out on a surprise January transfer target as Dominic Calvert-Lewin approaches a new contract with Leeds United, as reported by 101 Great Goals. United had shown interest in the 29-year-old striker following his impressive career revival at Elland Road following his arrival from Everton in 2025.
Career Revival at Elland Road
Calvert-Lewin moved across the Pennines 16 months ago on a free transfer after dealing with various injury struggles that limited him to just 92 Premier League outings during his last four campaigns with the Toffees. Newly promoted Leeds took a gamble on the forward, which paid off significantly as he netted 14 league goals across 35 matches last season and added four in eight appearances this term, including a goal in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United two weeks prior.
The striker maintained his fitness by altering his daily routines, enhancing his nutrition, and improving his recovery and sleep habits. His strong form earned him an international recall for England in March, leading to his 14th cap last month during a 3-0 victory over Czechia, though he ultimately missed out on a World Cup spot.
Manchester United’s Striker Search and Squad Issues
Manchester United had linked themselves with Calvert-Lewin while looking for experienced backup for Benjamin Sesko. Although his current agreement runs until 2028, recent reports indicate he is prepared to secure his long-term future with the West Yorkshire side instead.
Sesko faces a sideline absence until at least January due to a shin injury, leaving manager Michael Carrick without a traditional number nine to spearhead the attack. The team has deployed Matheus Cunha or Bryant Mbeumo up front, despite both players favoring slightly deeper positions.
Manchester United travel to face Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime while Carrick deals with intense pressure on his position. Last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth marked their eighth consecutive match without a victory across all competitions, placing them 16th in the Premier League standings heading into the weekend fixture.
Captain Bruno Fernandes will make his return to the squad at Stamford Bridge following positive discussions with Carrick during the week. The Portuguese midfielder had been left on the bench last weekend after publicly questioning the head coach’s tactical approach following a Champions League loss to Como.
