Everton secured a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a clinical 3-1 victory over Newcastle United, despite dropping Jack Grealish for disciplinary reasons ahead of the match. Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Thierno Barry earned David Moyes’ side a last-eight tie against Fleetwood Town.
Defensive Errors Cost Newcastle
Newcastle dominated early spells and registered 28 shots compared to Everton’s 11, but individual defensive mistakes and an ineffective attack ultimately ruined their hopes of lifting the trophy. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle described his team as “naive” and labeled the defeat “shocking” in front of nearly 8,000 traveling supporters.
The home side withstood heavy early pressure, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford forced into early saves against Harvey Barnes and Fabian Schär. Everton gradually shifted momentum, and the breakthrough arrived when a long clearance from Pickford caused confusion in the visitors’ defense. Tyrell George pressured Amar Dedic, allowing Hackney to square the ball for Garner to place a shot into the far corner past Lukas Hornicek.
Pickford and Dewsbury-Hall Orchestrate Victory
Everton doubled their lead before the break following a quick throw from Pickford to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Dewsbury-Hall evaded Dan Burn before being tripped by Jacob Ramsey, but referee Farai Hallam played advantage as the ball fell to Barry, who crossed for Hackney to volley home.
Jaissle made a triple substitution at half-time, and Newcastle created several chances after the interval through Yoane Wissa, Lewis Hall, Anthony Elanga, and Ramsey. However, Pickford remained firm to deny the visitors.
Everton sealed the win when Garner intercepted a pass from Dedic and played in Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder delivered a pass across the box to Barry, who controlled and finished past Hornicek to make it 3-0.
Dan Burn managed a late consolation header for Newcastle from an Elanga cross, prompting a brief melee involving Burn, Pickford, James Tarkowski, and Joelinton that resulted in yellow cards for all four players. Everton held on to advance to the next round.
