Chelsea’s Cole Palmer will not miss the upcoming Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Saturday, even though he received a red card in his previous league outing.
The Red Card Incident
Palmer received two yellow cards during the second half of Chelsea’s defeat against rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, resulting in a one-match ban. The England playmaker picked up his first caution for an off-the-ball incident involving Mateus Fernandes of Tottenham. Shortly after, he was shown a second yellow card for fouling Conor Gallagher.
Suspension Rules Explained
While a suspension normally applies to a team’s next Premier League match, Palmer will instead serve his ban during Chelsea’s EFL Cup fourth-round away match against Liverpool on Wednesday night. Red card suspensions apply across all domestic competitions rather than being restricted to the specific competition where the offense occurred. Conversely, suspensions resulting from accumulating yellow cards throughout a season must be served in the specific competition in which those cautions were received.
As a result of these rules, Chelsea will be without Palmer for their trip to Anfield, but the midfielder will be available to face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge three days later.
