Eugenio Chacarra enters the climax of the DP World Tour season aiming to hold off Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy to secure the Race to Dubai title. The final fortnight of the campaign takes place in the Middle East, beginning with the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship before concluding with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Chacarra Leads the Standings
Chacarra is in a strong position to join Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm as the only Spanish players to finish a season as European No 1 and lift the Harry Vardon Trophy. He secured victories at the KLM Open, the DS Automobiles 83° Open d’Italia, and the DP World India Championship in June and September, building a strong lead at the top of the standings.
As reported by SkySports, Chacarra stated that leading the Race to Dubai with two tournaments remaining feels like a dream and that he is playing the best golf of his career. He acknowledged the pressure from his nearest competitors, noting that Reed and McIlroy are two of the best players in the world and that he must maintain his form.
Chacarra holds a 669.27-point advantage over Reed and a 999.03-point lead over McIlroy heading into the play-offs. The winner in Abu Dhabi collects 1,500 Race to Dubai points, while the champion the following week earns 2,000 points.
Challengers and Field Line-Up
Reed needs a finish of tied-second or better in Abu Dhabi to retain any mathematical chance of catching Chacarra before the final event in Dubai. Meanwhile, McIlroy is targeting a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title and his fourth consecutive crown, though the Masters champion requires a strong finish to match Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record. McIlroy noted that Chacarra’s strong form makes the task more difficult.
South Africa’s Casey Jarvis sits fourth in the standings, followed by PGA champion and defending Abu Dhabi champion Aaron Rai in fifth. The top 70 available golfers qualify for the Abu Dhabi event, narrowing to the top 50 for the subsequent tournament in Dubai.
Several eligible players have chosen to skip the Abu Dhabi opening play-off due to safety concerns regarding regional conflict in the Middle East, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Bob MacIntyre, and Shane Lowry. In response to potential disruption, a DP World Tour spokesperson told SkySports that the Foreign Office has not issued advice against travel to the United Arab Emirates, confirming that events will proceed as scheduled while maintaining contact with international advisors.
PGA Tour Cards and Rookie Honors
The top 10 players in the Race to Dubai rankings who are not already exempt will secure PGA Tour cards for next season, an achievement already locked in by Chacarra and Reed. Other contenders currently in projected positions include Jarvis, Daniel Hillier, Jayden Schaper, Jacob Skov Olesen, Andy Sullivan, and Joe Dean.
Additionally, the next two tournaments will determine the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award for the highest-ranked player in their debut DP World Tour season, a category currently led by Japan’s Kota Kaneko ahead of South Africa’s Michael Hollick.
Live coverage of all four rounds at Yas Links GC will be broadcast on Sky Sports Golf, with broadcasts commencing at 7am for the first three days and 6.30am on Sunday.
