Rams’ Quentin Lake Apologizes to Chargers’ Justin Herbert

Los Angeles Rams safety Quentin Lake reached out to apologize to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert following critical remarks he made about the signal-caller on a podcast.

Podcast Remarks and Apology

Following the Rams’ victory over the Chargers, Lake appeared on Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown’s podcast, where he stated that Herbert was “throwing deli meat out there” during a two-interception performance. The remarks came during the Chargers’ seventh consecutive loss to begin the season. Lake also remarked after the game that Herbert “was seeing ghosts out there” and that his defense anticipated mistakes.

After the comments spread online, Lake sent a text message to apologize to Herbert. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times on Friday, Lake acknowledged he was unsure if Herbert read the message or cared to respond, but felt compelled to clarify that he meant no disrespect.

Herbert addressed the situation by telling reporters he had not looked into the comments or heard anything about them, choosing instead to focus entirely on football and preparing for Sunday’s game. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh defended his quarterback, stating that Herbert performed his job exceptionally well aside from two throws he would want back. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel also dismissed the criticism, noting that people voice opinions when expectations are unmet.

Trade Speculation and Upcoming Matchup

Herbert leads the NFL with 10 interceptions, having thrown at least one in every start this season alongside a 32.5 QBR. Despite this difficult start, the franchise quarterback is expected to remain off-limits ahead of the trade deadline, addressing recent reports of interest from the Minnesota Vikings.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that a team source made it clear the organization has never discussed trading Herbert, emphasizing that the idea has never even been uttered internally. The Chargers, who enter Sunday’s game without a touchdown in their last nine quarters of play, are set to host the 2-5 Houston Texans.
