Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first Englishman to claim football’s most prestigious individual trophy in 25 years. The England captain received the accolade at a ceremony held at the Palladium Theatre in London.
Success in London and Women’s Award
Two hours into the event, Kane’s name was announced from the final envelope to loud cheers within the auditorium. Moments before, the women’s Ballon d’Or was awarded to Alexia Putellas of London City Lionesses, marking her third time winning the prize five years after her initial victory with Barcelona.
In the men’s category, Kane surpassed co-favourites Lamine Yamal of Barcelona and Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid. The L’Équipe-sponsored trophy is determined by votes from journalists and administrators across international football.
A Stellar Year for Club and Country
The award rewards a dominant year for Kane, during which he secured the European Golden Boot, helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga title, and captained England to a World Cup semi-final.
“It was really tough this year, the incredible players I was up against,” Kane stated upon receiving the trophy, while thanking his fellow nominees, former teammates, and everyone he has played alongside.
“I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special,” he added.
Kane recorded 89 goals for club and country since the beginning of August 2025. Bayern Munich previously paid an initial €100m fee for the striker three years ago when he was 30 years old, an investment now regarded as fully justified due to his goalscoring output, creativity, and professionalism.
Legacy and Future Goals
As a Ballon d’Or recipient, Kane joins an elite group of historical winners following the era dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The achievement also brings a significant boost to his current and future commercial earnings.
The honor crowns a 16-year professional career that began with loan spells at Leyton Orient and Millwall before establishing himself in the Premier League.
Earlier in the month, the 33-year-old equalled England’s all-time appearance record and raised his international goal tally to 91 in 125 matches. He continues to target the upcoming home European Championships in two years as England’s captain.
