George Russell Refuses to Let Difficult F1 Season Define Career

George Russell has insisted that his challenging Formula One season will not define his career, maintaining that he still has years ahead of him to claim a world championship title. The 28-year-old British driver has faced a difficult campaign alongside his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Struggles and Resilience

Antonelli is positioned to secure the championship and become F1’s youngest world champion at the Mexican Grand Prix if he finishes in ninth place or higher. While Antonelli has claimed nine victories, Russell has secured three, struggling with consistency while adapting to energy management demands and tyres that do not suit his driving style.

Russell acknowledged that dealing with the car has been difficult, despite delivering standout performances including victories in Austria and Baku. Speaking at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Russell stated, “I’ve probably learned more about myself this year than I would have liked to, in all honesty. You know, the highs and lows you go through in sport are immense and that’s because we all care so much for what we’re doing.”

The Mercedes driver drew inspiration from older competitors on the grid, noting, “But I remind myself I’m 28 years old. I see Lewis [Hamilton] still competing extremely well at 41 and Fernando [Alonso] at 45. Lewis won the majority of his titles in his thirties and this year is absolutely not going to define my career as a whole.”

Russell praised Antonelli, admitting the Italian teenager has been the superior driver and deserves his first title in his second F1 season. After starting the year with a win in Australia, Russell watched as Antonelli claimed five consecutive victories to take a championship lead he has held ever since.

“It’s not going to break me. If anything, it’s going to make me stronger,” Russell said regarding the setbacks. “I’ve been pretty proud of my resilience and how I’ve sort of bounced back from very tough moments.” He added that he intends to analyze his fluctuating form and believes he has another 12 to 15 years left in his career.

Driver Illnesses Ahead of the Weekend

In the current standings, Russell finds himself in a close fight for second place, sitting one point ahead of Hamilton and six points clear of Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.

Off the track, Antonelli missed media commitments on Thursday due to a viral illness. The FIA granted him permission to sit out media duties as a precaution, and the team expects him to participate in Friday’s free practice sessions.

Additionally, the Cadillac team excused Valtteri Bottas from his Thursday media appearances in Mexico due to illness, opting to give him a day of rest to aid his recovery.
