Ahead of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 10, expert FPL Heisenberg has shared crucial recommendations for managers navigating key selection dilemmas, ranging from managing defensive injury concerns to weighing up alternative captaincy targets.
Managing Ezri Konsa and Defensive Strategy
Defensive assets have delivered strong value in recent gameweeks, but defender Ezri Konsa (£4.8m) presents a complex decision for fantasy managers. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed that Konsa experienced knee issues during mid-week Champions League play, leading to an early substitution. With William Saliba back in squad contention, acquiring Konsa this week is not recommended, as buyers may be forced to sell him as early as Gameweek 11.
However, existing owners do not need to panic. Speaking to BBC Sport, FPL Heisenberg explained that Konsa remains a hold for Gameweek 10 due to the possibility that he starts at home against Hull. If fit, managers can retain him briefly before transitioning to defenders with high defensive-contribution potential in Gameweek 11 or 12, such as Brighton’s Luka Vuskovic (£5.2m), Liverpool’s Jeremy Jacquet (£5.1m), or Leeds United’s Tarik Muharemovic (£5.1m).
Assessment of Underperforming Midfielders
The current meta in FPL heavily favors defenders offering goal threats, defensive contribution points, and solid clean-sheet potential. Standard team structures are shifting toward four defenders alongside three or four midfielders and two or three forwards. Despite recent blanks from popular midfielders, selling them immediately is not always necessary when benching them during difficult fixtures remains an option.
Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.8m) remains a viable choice as his team’s primary penalty taker and key focal point. Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo (£7.9m) continues to generate high involvement in attacking output despite his team’s recent difficulties, while Brentford’s Kevin Schade (£6.2m) plays for an improving side with consistent goal threat. Unless managers urgently need to fund transfers for essential targets like Brighton’s Pascal Gross (£6.2m) or Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers (£8.2m), holding these midfielders remains recommended.
Defensive Targets and Liverpool Assets
With reliable early-season defenders like Maxim de Cuyper (£5.4m) and Riccardo Calafiori (£5.9m) facing potential rotation risks, managers should begin planning their next defensive moves. Bournemouth duo Antonio Silva (£5.1m) and James Hill (£5.6m) emerge as standout options, both averaging over nine defensive contributions per 90 minutes ahead of a favorable fixture against Ipswich Town.
Leeds defender Tarik Muharemovic presents another viable entry point ahead of hosting Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road, while Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) and Jeremy Jacquet (£5.1m) offer strong appeal against a Crystal Palace side that has struggled with defensive set-pieces. Premium options such as Arsenal’s Gabriel (£8.0m) also maintain strong value.
As Liverpool begin a favorable run of fixtures starting at Crystal Palace, their defensive options represent the most straightforward picks. In midfield, uncertainty remains around Cody Gakpo (£7.1m) due to competition from Victor Munoz (£6.5m) and Bradley Barcola (£8.1m), while Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.7m) continues to see limited minutes. Up front, Alexander Isak (£9.2m) is a strong option, though his price tag makes him difficult to fit alongside alternative forwards such as Nicolas Jackson (£7.0m), Joao Pedro (£7.7m), Erling Haaland (£15.8m), Thierno Barry (£5.6m), or Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m).
Captaincy Decisions for Gameweek 10
Selecting a captain for Gameweek 10 offers an intriguing debate between premium forward Erling Haaland and top Arsenal defenders. Haaland travels to face Nottingham Forest, a side with competitive underlying numbers under manager Oliver Glasner that can prove difficult to break down. While Haaland remains the safer traditional armband choice, Arsenal defensive assets offer a compelling alternative.
Gabriel combines strong clean-sheet odds with set-piece goal potential and defensive-contribution points. Meanwhile, Calafiori offers major attacking threat following a midweek rest, positioning himself high up the pitch when Arsenal dominate possession against Hull. With defenders consistently recording double-digit returns this season, backing an Arsenal defender offers a high-upside alternative strategy for Gameweek 10.
