MJ Melendez’s 2026 Season Mirrored the Mets Offseason

Signing MJ Melendez was an intriguing idea that the New York Mets ultimately relied on a bit too heavily, serving as a clear microcosm of the offseason run by David Stearns prior to the 2026 campaign.

The Background and Acquisition of MJ Melendez

Melendez fit the exact mold of a margin-seeking addition for a major league roster. At 27 years old heading into the season, he entered his career as a former Top 100 prospect recognized by Baseball Prospectus, Baseball America, and MLB Pipeline. Following two roughly league-average offensive years with the Royals in 2022 and 2023, his performance dipped in 2024 and plummeted in 2025, leading to his release from Kansas City and his subsequent arrival in Queens.

On balance, Melendez did not perform terribly for his new club. Although his .191 batting average immediately catches the eye negatively, he reached base at a higher clip than expected with a .315 on-base percentage. He finished the year slugging .350, yielding a 91 wRC+ overall. While he did not profile as an everyday starter, he contributed sufficiently in a bench role to sustain his professional career.

A Hot Start and Subsequent Decline

The strangest phase of Melendez’s year occurred when he briefly served as a bright spot while the Mets struggled mightily at the plate. A wave of injuries forced the team to deploy Melendez heavily throughout April, and he responded effectively by posting a 191 wRC+ for the month. This production came entirely in isolation, as the rest of the roster managed a league-low 77 wRC+ during that same stretch.

His performance dipped significantly thereafter, producing a 54 wRC+ in May and a 71 wRC+ in June before he spent the remainder of the campaign in Syracuse. Melendez chose free agency in October, having likely done enough to secure at least a minor league contract elsewhere.

Melendez ultimately provided an apt parallel for the 2026 New York Mets as a whole. His early surge arrived at an inopportune time, much like the team’s late burst of competitive play that materialized well after the playoff race had effectively concluded.
