Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick to help Como secure a dominant 9-1 victory against Lens, equalling the record for the most goals scored in a single Champions League fixture. Meanwhile, Federico Valverde scored a late winner to give Real Madrid a 3-2 victory away at AEK Athens.
Como Equal Scoring Record
Only two teams had previously won a match by a margin of eight goals since the modern Champions League format launched in 1992, with Liverpool defeating Besiktas 8-0 in 2007 and Real Madrid posting the same scoreline against Malmo in 2015. Como became only the second side to net nine goals in a single game in the tournament, following Bayern Munich’s 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the 2024 league phase.
Guided by Cesc Fàbregas, the Serie A side achieved three victories from four matches in their debut campaign through an impressive performance. Nico Paz contributed a goal and two assists, alongside goals from Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina, and Matteo Papaccioli. Como previously secured 4-1 home wins against RB Leipzig and Manchester United in the same campaign. Additionally, the result marked the first time a club scored nine away goals in the European Cup since Feyenoord defeated Olympiakos in 1971.
Real Madrid Maintain Perfect Start
Federico Valverde scored a long-range shot to secure a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid against AEK Athens, maintaining their perfect record in the group phase. José Mourinho’s team, featuring Vinícius Júnior following a two-match domestic suspension, twice recovered from a deficit against the Greek champions before Valverde secured the points.
Aboubakary Koïta opened the scoring for AEK in the 12th minute before Jude Bellingham equalized with a flick for the 15-time champions. Stavros Pilios restored the lead for the hosts with 15 minutes remaining, but Kylian Mbappé quickly equalized for Madrid to pave the way for Valverde’s late strike. The result extended Madrid’s winning run to seven consecutive matches across all competitions.
