Diogo Dalot believes Manchester United’s comeback victory against Roma in the Champions League can transform their troubled season and show unhappy supporters that the players care. United secured a 3-2 win after trailing 2-0 at half-time, overcoming a dismal start that had seen them booed off the pitch.

Fan Protests and Difficult Season Start

The Glazer family, owners since 2005 with £1.2bn of debt loaded onto the club, remain the focus of fan anger. Prior to kick-off at Old Trafford, thousands of green-and-gold balloons were released from the Stretford End, while fans sang anti-Glazer songs and threw tennis balls onto the pitch at 20 minutes and five seconds to symbolize the year 2005. The team have accumulated just seven points from their opening nine Premier League games, marking their worst start since the 1987-88 season.

The players have also faced heavy criticism, with the Stretford End turning on them following a 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth. Despite the team’s struggles, supporters have heavily backed manager Michael Carrick.

Tactical Shifts and Second-Half Revival

Dalot endured a difficult first half against Roma after Carrick asked him to push high up the pitch. Roma capitalized on space left vacant at left-back, scoring the opening goal through Matias Soulé after Kobbie Mainoo lost possession, before winning a penalty while Dalot was caught forward. Dalot confirmed the tactical instruction, stating they knew Roma would play man-to-man but needed to avoid losing the ball in central areas.

Trailing 2-0 at the break and greeted by boos, United altered their approach. Bruno Fernandes started the comeback with a retaken penalty, before Matheus Cunha scored two late goals to seal the 3-2 win.

Looking Ahead to Aston Villa

Dalot admitted the team’s situation is tough and requires them to go all out when nothing is left to lose. He emphasized that the energy created inside the stadium with the right attitude makes them a very strong team.

Manchester United host Aston Villa on Sunday and will need to maintain this resilience. Dalot noted that the key message at half-time was addressing how quickly the team gets disappointed when moments do not go their way, identifying that specific momentum as the attitude they need to change.
