Enzo Maresca faced a difficult departure from the City Ground on Saturday as Manchester City slumped to a third consecutive Premier League defeat following a 3-1 loss against Nottingham Forest. After beginning the campaign with seven straight victories, the manager’s strong start has quickly deteriorated, leaving his side six points behind the league leaders.
Defensive Struggles and Individual Errors
City’s vulnerable defense continued to struggle as Josko Gvardiol gave away possession in the sixth minute, allowing Jair Cunha to open the scoring. Former striker Liam Delap capitalized further with two goals, aided by additional lapses from the visiting backline. Maresca noted that his team failed to match Forest’s intensity or win duels and second balls during the opening half, admitting that the reaction came too late after falling two goals behind.
Former Forest winger Steve Stone told BBC Radio 5 Live that City’s defensive line appeared disjointed and wide, leaving them heavily exposed in transition. Compounding the situation, Maresca had to substitute both Gvardiol and Marc Guehi at half-time due to injuries, forcing tactical shifts across the backline.
Title Aspirations and Midfield Concerns
The recent slump includes three successive league defeats for the first time since late 2024, making City only the second team in English top-flight history to win their opening seven games before losing their next three. Meanwhile, Arsenal holds a six-point advantage at the top, a margin historically overcome only twice by eventual champions in Premier League history, notably by Manchester City themselves in 2013-14.
Club-record signing Enzo Fernandez also faced scrutiny after an underwhelming performance in midfield alongside a struggling dynamic. Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport that City displayed a poor mentality and sloppy play, suggesting that major questions now face the manager in getting the squad back on track during the international break.
