Martin Odegaard struck a 72nd-minute winner as Arsenal ground out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium. The result extended the Gunners’ lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points over second-placed Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta’s side spent much of the match attempting to break down a resilient Hull defense. Despite dominating ball possession, the hosts struggled to capitalize on their chances before their captain finally made the decisive breakthrough in the second half.
Hull Holds Firm in Frustrating First Half
Hull City started brightly and nearly scored in the opening two minutes when Regan Slater delivered a corner kick to the far post, where John Egan directed a header into the side-netting. Arsenal soon gained control of possession, with Noni Madueke creating early danger down the right wing by delivering a cross to Ezri Konsa, though Gabriel was unable to turn the ball home.
The visitors threatened again on the counter-attack in the 19th minute. Oli McBurnie released Elliot Stroud into the box, forcing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into a save from a sharp angle. Tim Iroegbunam attempted to convert the rebound, but Declan Rice intervened with a crucial tackle. Rice later sent a long-range shot narrowly wide at the opposite end of the pitch.
Arsenal continued to press before the break as Christos Tzolis saw a header saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis before firing over the crossbar from a Jurrien Timber cross. The most prominent incident of the first half occurred when Kai Havertz went down in the penalty area following a shirt pull by Nobel Mendy. Although VAR recommended an on-field review for a potential penalty, the officials determined Havertz was offside during the build-up. In stoppage time, Tzolakis comfortably saved another Rice header from a Madueke delivery.
Odegaard Delivers the Winner
Arsenal restarted with higher urgency, though Hull remained hazardous on quick breaks. Mohamed-Ali Cho led a counter-attack following hold-up play by McBurnie, only to be denied by a sliding block from Konsa. Madueke continued to test the visitors, driving a powerful weak-footed shot in the 57th minute that required an outstanding save from Tzolakis, who also stopped an effort from Tzolis shortly after.
Arteta modified his lineup midway through the half, introducing Viktor Gyokeres, Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, and Piero Hincapie. Shortly after Hull lost Semi Ajayi to an injury, Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. Tzolakis parried another strong shot from Madueke into the central area, allowing Odegaard to react fastest and guide a right-footed shot into the net.
Arsenal pushed to double their lead late in the match. Tzolakis made additional saves from Merino and Gyokeres, and later touched the ball as Madueke rounded him in the 87th minute, allowing Brooke Norton-Cuffy to clear off the line. Hull attempted a late equalizer in stoppage time through Slater, but Gabriel made a tracking challenge to preserve the 1-0 scoreline.
