Golden State Warriors freshman Yaxel Lendeborg has quickly become one of the most compelling personalities in the NBA. The 24-year-old forward has spent his opening weeks antagonizing superstars, speaking his mind in the press, and establishing himself as an essential player on the court.
A Unique Journey to the NBA
Lendeborg spent years gaming for 12 to 14 hours a day and did not debut on his high school basketball team until he was an upperclassman. Before entering the professional league, the Puerto Rican player admitted he rarely watched NBA games, racking up college accolades instead—including helping Michigan secure its first national championship in 37 years. Standing at 6ft 10in, Lendeborg provides much-needed size to a Golden State squad that typically relies on quick ball movement and shooting rather than height.
Clashes and Unfiltered Press Conferences
Lendeborg kicked off his season in a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, sparking a rivalry with Lakers star Luka Dončić after jawing at him throughout the game. Following the match, Lendeborg criticized Dončić’s foul-baiting style of play in a press conference. As reported by Sport | The Guardian, the rookie stated, “You get the foul call. Congratulations, bro. Then you talk to me like you did something great. C’mon, dog. That shit is weak. It kind of threw me off because I have so much respect for him. Gone, man. Gone.” Lendeborg later acknowledged that he took his complaints a bit far.
Rejecting traditional media training, Lendeborg told the San Francisco Chronicle that he intends to remain authentic. “I’m not doing that, man,” Lendeborg said of media training, as noted by Sport | The Guardian. “I’m going to stay true to myself, and be honest. I’ve seen plenty of interviews where people are talking and it’s like, ‘Man, I don’t want to watch this,’ you know what I mean? And it’s not like I’m click-baiting or click-farming or whatever the heck people are saying.”
Strong On-Court Performance
Beyond his personality, Lendeborg is delivering impressive numbers. He put up 31 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists against the Denver Nuggets while helping hold Aaron Gordon to just seven points. A few days later, he piled up 37 points against the Los Angeles Clippers. During a victory against the Miami Heat, he posted 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, celebrating a routine foul drawn against Bam Adebayo with unbridled enthusiasm.
The Warriors have capitalized on Lendeborg’s contributions, stringing together a six-win streak behind Stephen Curry. While expectations for the franchise remain measured, Lendeborg’s standout play and vibrant character have provided the entire basketball fanbase with a new star to watch.
