England face World Cup exit despite messy win over PNG

England moved to the brink of a World Cup exit following a chaotic and error-ridden 34-12 victory over Papua New Guinea that almost certainly falls short of the points margin they needed.

Chasing the Points Deficit

Following an opening defeat against Tonga, England faced a straightforward task in their final two group fixtures: win convincingly to maintain any chance of reaching the semi-finals. They accomplished this mission against France with an 82-0 rout and appeared set to chip away at the 68-point deficit required to overtake Samoa when they raced to a 22-0 lead within 22 minutes through tries from Matty Ashton, AJ Brimson, Dominic Young, and Harry Smith.

However, the performance unraveled significantly from that point onward, despite head coach Brian McDermott calling for patience from his team ahead of the match. Frequent turnovers and a mounting penalty count allowed Papua New Guinea to regain their confidence, resulting in tries for the Kumuls from Dudley Dotoi and Gairo Voro as England surrendered their momentum.

Costly Errors and Unlikely Hopes

The match featured numerous miscues, highlighted by England centre Herbie Farnworth having the ball stripped while racing toward the try line, just before Mikey Lewis scored following Morgan Knowles’ second-half touchdown. England committed 21 errors and recorded a completion rate of just 57%, falling well short of international standards.

This display contrasted sharply with their structured win over France, leaving England dependent on Tonga defeating Samoa by a margin exceeding 46 points to secure a spot in the last four. Given that Tonga suffered a 34-6 defeat to Samoa in Brisbane a year prior and have not beaten their neighbors since 2018, that outcome remains highly improbable.
