Crystal Palace battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim at Selhurst Park despite being reduced to 10 men in their Europa League clash.
Early Setback for Palace
Alexander Prass gave the German visitors an early lead, capitalising on a lapse at the back to put Pierre Sage’s side under pressure. Hoffenheim struck after just seven minutes with their first meaningful attack when Andrej Kramaric released Tim Lemperle down the right, and the forward delivered a perfectly weighted pass into Prass’s path. The Austrian fired a left-footed effort towards goal, which slipped through goalkeeper Dean Henderson and trickled over the line.
Palace had earlier seen Daichi Kamada’s effort ruled out for offside, and the hosts attempted to respond quickly to falling behind. Jean-Philippe Mateta headed narrowly wide, although the move was again halted by an offside decision. The visitors remained dangerous on the counter-attack, while Palace struggled to turn their possession into clear opportunities.
Late Red Card and Recovery
Wharton’s dismissal in the 77th minute made Palace’s task even harder, leaving Sage’s men to chase the game with 10 players.
Despite being a man down, the hosts fought back to claim a point and avoid a second defeat in four European matches this season.
