Clara Serrajordi is rapidly emerging as a key figure in the Barcelona midfield, having made her first-team debut at just 17 and starting ahead of Aitana Bonmatí in the 2026 Champions League final. The 18-year-old is now stepping up to fill the void left in the squad following the departure of Alexia Putellas.
From La Masia Academy to the First Team
An avid chess player who uses the game to disconnect from football, Serrajordi mirrors her strategic hobby on the pitch with a style that is always a step ahead. Scouted at age 11 in 2018 while playing for CE Llerona against Barcelona’s alevín team, she recalled watching her future club and dreaming of playing alongside the best. Although only a small percentage of academy players successfully transition to senior squads, Serrajordi has already accumulated major honors including a Champions League title, two league trophies, two Copa de la Reinas, and a Supercopa.
Reflecting on her rapid ascent in an interview with Sport | The Guardian, Serrajordi admitted she never anticipated achieving so much upon signing with the club. Her belief grew when she played for the B team and occasionally trained with the senior squad, realizing she belonged when regular matchday call-ups began. During the 2025-26 campaign, she started 19 of the 26 league matches she appeared in, contributing a goal and three assists despite missing a month at the start of the current season due to an arm fracture.
Stepping Up on the Biggest Stages
In May, coach Pere Romeu named Serrajordi in the starting lineup for the Champions League final against OL Lyonnes in Oslo, where Barcelona secured a 4-0 victory. She noted that she learned she would start during the pre-season match talk, viewing it as a dream come true to fight for the season’s most important title in her debut year.
Physically and technically similar to Putellas, Serrajordi was mentored by the former Barcelona captain and is seen as a natural successor in midfield. While acknowledging that Putellas is a one-of-a-kind player who cannot be replicated, Serrajordi pointed out that all academy midfielders share the same signature club style. She credited the experienced senior players for taking younger talents under their wing and providing the confidence needed to perform at the highest level alongside world-class teammates like Patri Guijarro and Aitana Bonmatí.
