Victor Wembanyama delivered a historic performance on Wednesday, recording a career-high 52 points and 24 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 112-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks. The victory marks the sixth consecutive win for the Spurs, with Wembanyama securing the result by sinking a decisive free throw with 24.2 seconds remaining.

A Dominant Two-Way Performance

Beyond his scoring and rebounding, Wembanyama made a significant impact on the defensive end, recording eight blocks. Three of those blocks occurred within a 13-second window during the second quarter. His first-half performance was particularly notable, as he became the first player in 30 seasons to record at least 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a single half, while also converting all 15 of his free-throw attempts during that period.

Spurs guard Dylan Harper praised his teammate’s defensive intensity, noting that such plays appear natural for the 22-year-old. “If I got blocked three times in a row, I feel like I’d be pretty upset,” Harper told The Guardian. “But that’s Vic. He takes pride on the defensive side and things like that are just natural to him.”

Late-Game Drama

The Spurs held a 19-point lead early in the third quarter before the Mavericks mounted a comeback. Dallas narrowed the deficit to two points by the 8:17 mark of the final period and eventually took a 103-100 lead following a three-pointer by PJ Washington with 5:38 left to play. The game remained competitive until the final seconds, with Naji Marshall tying the score at 111 with a three-pointer with 1:41 remaining. After Wembanyama’s go-ahead free throw, Kyrie Irving attempted a contested turnaround jumper with 2.5 seconds left, but the shot missed as time expired.

In addition to Wembanyama’s contributions, Harper added 21 points, Stephon Castle scored 17, and De’Aaron Fox finished with 10. For the Mavericks, who have now lost two consecutive games, Irving led the scoring with 29 points, while Cooper Flagg recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Looking Ahead

Despite his record-breaking night, Wembanyama suggested he is still adjusting and recovering from recent illness. “It’s just figuring things out,” Wembanyama said. “Sometimes, you’re one step ahead. Also, I haven’t been feeling great lately. I’m sick. I felt like I got my legs back. So, it should be more like this more often.”

Harper drew comparisons between Wembanyama and NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain, citing the difficulty opposing teams face when trying to contain the Spurs star. “He’s basically Wilt,” Harper said. “The other team tries to do everything [to stop Wembanyama]. They throw out any adjustment, every adjustment. It’s hard to keep big fella out of the paint. He’s so dominant when he screens and rolls. He knows how to get to his spots. He’s great at the free throw line.”
