Pirelli has announced its tyre selection for the upcoming Sao Paulo Grand Prix, opting for a softer compound range than the previous year. The manufacturer has designated the C3 as the hard tyre, the C4 as the medium, and the C5 as the soft for the weekend.
Track Surface and Technical Adjustments
The Interlagos circuit has undergone significant maintenance since the last season. Resurfacing work was completed on the track sections between Turns 3 and 5, as well as between Turns 8 and 9. According to Pirelli, these changes may influence grip levels and how the track evolves throughout the event, which could notably impact tyre performance during long-distance runs.
Teams are expected to utilize the three free practice sessions to evaluate the new surface and determine how it affects tyre wear and degradation. Last year, tyre degradation was a critical technical element at this venue. While graining was less severe than anticipated, the compounds used previously showed varying levels of sliding and degradation, ultimately favoring a two-stop race strategy.
Circuit Demands and Strategic Factors
Interlagos presents a layout that generates average lateral forces, balancing high-speed corners with long straights. Pirelli notes that the track does not place extreme stress on the tyres, with loads distributed relatively evenly across both the front and rear axles. The circuit’s flowing design provides multiple overtaking opportunities, allowing teams some flexibility in their strategic planning.
The primary challenge for teams will be balancing single-lap speed with effective tyre management over longer stints. Additionally, the event’s timing often brings unpredictable weather. Pirelli highlighted that significant temperature fluctuations and rain are common at Interlagos, meaning the use of intermediate or full wet tyres remains a possibility throughout the weekend.
