Moyes Says Grealish Can Still Have Everton Future

Everton manager David Moyes stated that a return remains possible for Jack Grealish at the club, though he remains uncertain when the midfielder will rejoin the squad. The former England international missed both of the Toffees’ recent victories against Newcastle following a disciplinary matter.

Disciplinary Issue and Recent Absences

The 31-year-old loanee from Manchester City was omitted from Thursday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win due to a club decision stemming from what was believed to be an unauthorized absence from training. Grealish was sidelined once again on Monday for their Premier League fixture at St James’ Park, where Everton secured a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Thierno Barry.

While the club attributed his latest absence to a lack of fitness, Moyes remained guarded when speaking to BBC Sport at full-time. He noted that the player is currently unavailable and mentioned that a decision regarding his return will be made in consultation with the club when the time is right. When questioned specifically about fitness, Moyes reiterated that he could only confirm the player’s current unavailability. Pressed further on whether the disciplinary matter had concluded, Moyes replied that he could not comment on the situation.

Uncertain Return and Career Background

Everton’s upcoming fixture is a home match against Coventry on Friday at 20:00 GMT, and Moyes remains unsure if Grealish will be available for selection. However, when asked directly if a path back exists for the midfielder, Moyes answered affirmatively that there is.

Grealish is currently working to revive his career at Everton after losing his place at Manchester City, despite commanding a £100m transfer fee in 2021. The midfielder played an important part in helping City secure the 2022-23 Treble, and his contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the season. He netted two goals across 22 appearances for Everton last term during an initial loan stint that ended early due to injury. He rejoined the Merseyside club for a second loan spell this season but managed only six appearances before falling out of the team.
