Everton Edge Newcastle 1-0 to Move Up to Seventh

Everton climbed to seventh place in the Premier League after securing a 1-0 victory against Newcastle United at St James’ Park. A second-half tap-in from striker Thierno Barry delivered the win for the visitors, prompting home supporters to boo their team following a second consecutive league defeat on home soil.

Barry Strikes After Halftime

The decisive moment came in the 49th minute when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall found Tyrique George with a sharp pass. George fired a powerful shot that Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek could not handle, allowing Barry to push the rebound into the net from close range. The goal was Barry’s fourth top-flight strike of the campaign and his third in five appearances.

Hornicek kept Newcastle in the match with several crucial saves, tipping headers from Jarrad Branthwaite and Jake O’Brien behind the target while also pushing a long-range curling effort from Dewsbury-Hall over the crossbar.

Newcastle nearly leveled the score when Harvey Barnes sent an inviting cross toward Anthony Elanga. Elanga’s touch struck the post and spun along the goal line before Everton central defender James Tarkowski cleared the ball to safety. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was rarely tested until deep into second-half stoppage time, when he reacted quickly to block a turning shot from substitute Yoane Wissa with his leg.

Newcastle finished the match with ten men after substitute Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card in the dying moments for a late foul on Harrison Armstrong’s ankle. Newcastle remain 13th in the table, having won only one home league fixture this season.

Team Selection and Upcoming Fixtures

Branthwaite returned to Everton’s starting lineup after missing two games due to a concussion. However, Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish was left out of the matchday squad after a breach of club discipline earlier in the week left him deemed not match-fit. Newcastle made two adjustments from their EFL Cup exit against Everton four days earlier, bringing Elanga and Joelinton into the starting lineup in place of Ramsey and Jacob Murphy.

The result gives Everton three consecutive away league wins at Newcastle for the first time in their history, while ending a nine-match winless away run in the Premier League. Newcastle have now suffered defeats in 22 of their last 33 Monday night top-flight matches.

Newcastle travel to face Fulham on Saturday, while Everton return home to host Coventry City on Friday evening.
