British tennis player Harriet Dart claimed her maiden WTA title by overcoming a set deficit to defeat Lilli Tagger in the Guangzhou Open final in China. The 30-year-old qualifier secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the 18-year-old Austrian opponent.
Championship Match Journey
Dart advanced to her first tour-level final after saving three match points during her semi-final victory against Sun Xinran. In the championship match, the British No 5 lost her opening service game and faved a break point in her subsequent service game before securing her first game on the scoreboard against the fourth seed. Dart broke back to level at 4-4 in the opening set, but Tagger responded immediately to claim the first set.
Dart secured the initial break point of the second set to lead 5-3, successfully using that momentum to equalize the match score. The deciding set featured a sequence of five consecutive breaks of serve, which concluded when Dart courageously saved two break points to hold her serve for a 5-3 lead. During the following game, Dart earned two championship points, though Tagger erased the first with a powerful serve and Dart hit a mid-court forehand into the net on the second.
Dart quickly put the missed opportunity behind her to serve out the match to 15, dropping flat on her back in celebration as an unreturned serve sealed her victory.
Post-Match Reactions and Rankings Impact
Dart expressed her gratitude on court, stating that she would attempt to avoid becoming overly emotional while thanking her team for their support throughout the week. She also praised the large audience and expressed her desire to return for the tournament next year.
The tournament victory successfully elevated Dart back inside the top 100 of the official WTA rankings.
