Cardiff moved back into the top half of the United Rugby Championship by defeating Ospreys 26-0 in a scrappy Welsh derby at St Helen’s. Two tries from wing Tom Bowen and further scores from Josh Adams and hooker Tom Howe secured the away bonus-point victory.
Match Action and First Half
Cardiff controlled the early pressure and opened the scoring with a walk-in try for Bowen. Ospreys thought they had leveled when prop Steffan Thomas was driven over, but the television match official disallowed the score after ruling that Cardiff scrum-half Johan Mulder prevented the grounding. Cardiff survived the pressure and executed a well-worked scrum move that allowed Bowen to sprint over for his second try.
Cardiff centre Steffan Emanuel displayed strong creativity, nearly setting up another try with a break and kick before providing a deft kick that Josh Adams latched onto for a score. Ospreys suffered a further setback when flanker Ross Moriarty sustained a head injury and was replaced by Morgan Morse, leaving Cardiff with a comfortable 19-0 lead at half-time.
Second Half and Bonus Point
Ospreys gained early scrummaging superiority in the second half, prompting Cardiff to bring on international props Scott Sio and Javan Sebastian. Ospreys co-captain Sam Parry was held up over the try line, and Cardiff received warnings for persistent penalties as frustration grew over the breakdown interpretations.
Cardiff’s defense held firm, with teenage replacement hooker Howe winning a crucial turnover penalty. Howe then capped off the performance by scoring the bonus-point try from a driven maul. In the final seconds, Emanuel sealed the shutout victory by stopping Keelan Giles with a covering tackle in front of a 5,592 sell-out crowd.
The United Rugby Championship now enters a five-week break for the November international fixtures, leaving Cardiff in seventh place and Ospreys in ninth.
