Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables is confronting difficult choices regarding his offense following a 42-25 defeat to South Carolina on Saturday. The loss dropped the Sooners to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Southeastern Conference, highlighting ongoing difficulties under offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.
First-Half Struggles and Stifled Production
The home crowd showered the field with boos as the Sooners fell behind 28-10 by halftime. Oklahoma’s ground game offered little early assistance, leaving quarterback John Mateer to complete 7 of 12 throws for only 25 yards in the opening two quarters, relying heavily on short perimeter passes without attacking downfield. The team accumulated more penalty yardage than offensive yards prior to the break, with their sole first-half touchdown coming on a defensive interception run back by Kip Lewis.
Venables pointed to a lack of execution and an absence of big plays following the contest. The Sooners entered the matchup sitting at the bottom of the SEC in both total offense and rushing yards, while ranking 15th in scoring offense. According to TruMedia data, Oklahoma also entered the weekend with a 34.1% three-and-out rate on possessions, placing the program 120th across the country.
Evaluating the unit during the television broadcast, former Oklahoma player and SEC Network analyst Dari Nowkah expressed frustration with the lack of adjustments at quarterback. “It ain’t changing,” Oklahoma grad and analyst Dari Nowkah said at halftime from the SEC Network set. “You’ll see No. 10 trot back out there. That’s been the story every game of John Mateer’s career; there are opportunities, they’re just not being discovered.”
Questions Surrounding Scheme and Quarterback Depth
Arbuckle arrived after the 2024 campaign to revamp the offense alongside Mateer, whom he previously coached at Washington State. While the Sooners reached the College Football Playoff the prior year behind a dominant defense, their offensive efficiency has remained low. Over their first eight possessions against the Gamecocks, Oklahoma produced just three points before Mateer found Ivan Carreon for two fourth-quarter touchdowns after the contest was out of reach. Mateer concluded the afternoon with 244 yards on 26-of-43 passing.
The setback leaves Venables with a 20-19 record in conference matchups at Oklahoma, risking a third losing campaign in five years. Arbuckle is now nearing the end of the second year of his three-year contract, and the roster outlook behind Mateer offers little game experience, with senior Whitt Newbauer and sophomore Bowe Bentley having combined for merely two pass attempts this year alongside incoming freshmen. The coaching staff will need to resolve the offense’s identity and evaluate the transfer portal before planning toward 2027.
