Rafael Nadal’s Paris Masters History: Every Player Who Beat Him

Rafael Nadal concluded his illustrious tennis career without ever capturing the singles title at the Paris Masters. While the Spanish legend dominated the French capital by winning Roland Garros a record 14 times, the indoor tournament at Bercy remained one of the few major trophies that eluded him before his retirement in 2024.

Early Near-Misses and Injuries

Nadal came closest to the title during his tournament debut in 2007, dropping just one set before reaching the final. Unseeded player David Nalbandian defeated Nadal in that championship match with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 victory. Nalbandian expressed surprise at the ease of the win after the match, noting that breaking Nadal allowed him to play more relaxed and hit winners from everywhere.

Following that initial defeat, injuries and tough opponents repeatedly halted Nadal’s progress in Paris. In 2008, he reached the quarter-finals but retired after dropping the first set 6-1 to Nikolay Davydenko due to a right knee injury. He advanced to the semi-finals the following year in 2009, where rival Novak Djokovic defeated him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Later Appearances and Final Matches

After a four-year absence from the tournament, Nadal returned in 2013 to reach the semi-finals, losing to compatriot David Ferrer 6-3, 7-5. Stan Wawrinka then eliminated him in the 2015 quarter-finals through two tight tiebreak sets, 7-6(8), 7-6(7). Subsequent campaigns in 2017 and 2019 saw Nadal reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively, only to withdraw each time due to knee and abdominal injuries.

Nadal made another strong run in 2020, advancing to the semi-finals before falling to Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-5. Although he reached at least the quarter-finals in his first eight appearances at the event, that streak ended during his ninth and final appearance in 2022. Tommy Paul defeated Nadal in the second round by a score of 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.

Nadal never returned to the Paris Masters prior to his 2024 retirement. The event remains alongside the ATP Finals, Miami Open, and Shanghai Masters as the only tournaments at the Masters 1000 level and above that Nadal never won during his career.
