Football Association of Wales chief executive Noel Mooney stated that the organization maintains its stance that Fifa president Gianni Infantino should resign. Mooney’s comments come after Infantino asserted that he retains the support of the vast majority of international football following controversy over a World Cup competition sell-off proposal.
Calls for Leadership Change
Mooney explained that the position of the Football Association of Wales has remained unchanged since the body withdrew its support for Infantino in August. He criticized the current state of international football administration, stating that the global system fails to serve national associations properly. He emphasized that the role of a Fifa president requires moral guardianship and a constant dedication to the best interests of the sport.
Infantino faced intense scrutiny over the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal that surfaced in July, which involved selling stakes in Fifa tournaments to private investors. Earlier this month, Infantino apologized to the Fifa Council regarding the communication and consultation process surrounding the controversial plan. European governing body Uefa subsequently demanded that Fifa disclose essential documents and respond to all inquiries regarding its decision-making processes by November 2.
Demanding Systemic Reform
Speaking to BBC Wales, Mooney characterized the FFE project as a clear illustration of inadequate administration and poor protection of the sport. He noted that Uefa requested a comprehensive review of all documentation linked to the controversy.
Beyond the position of the president, Mooney argued that the entire structure of football administration requires overhaul to prevent excessive concentration of power in a single individual.
