Tottenham moved into the top half of the Premier League standings after securing a third consecutive victory with a 2-0 win against 10-man Crystal Palace. The visitors played the majority of the match a man down following an early red card.
Early Red Card Alters Match
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta received a straight red card in the 13th minute after a VAR review. Referee Michael Oliver consulted the pitchside monitor and dismissed the Frenchman following a sliding challenge that caught Micky van de Ven on the Achilles.
Archie Gray capitalized on the numerical advantage 12 minutes later, meeting Mohammed Kudus with a deep corner header that went back across goal and past goalkeeper Dean Henderson to put Tottenham in front. Palace suffered their third consecutive league defeat, dropping them to third from bottom in the table and increasing the pressure on manager Pierre Sage amid reports regarding his future.
Spurs Seal Victory Late
Tottenham struggled to extend their lead for much of the match, as Henderson made saves against Dominic Solanke and Sandro Tonali’s charge down of Tyrick Mitchell’s clearance. Mathys Tel and Andy Robertson also missed opportunities as Spurs pressed for a second goal.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 73rd minute when Jan Paul van Hecke attacked Mateus Fernandes’ cross. Although Henderson tipped his initial header onto the crossbar, the rebound bounced off the Dutchman’s shin and crossed the line. Henderson subsequently denied Conor Gallagher and Dejan Kulusevski, while Kudus had a goal ruled out for offside and missed another chance following a setup from 18-year-old debutant Luca Williams-Barnett.
Crystal Palace prepares to face Hoffenheim in Europe before hosting Liverpool, while Tottenham looks ahead to their upcoming fixtures.
