No. 13 Texas Tech secured a vital 34-26 victory over No. 22 Arizona, propelled by first-time starting quarterback Thomas Castellanos. The win allows the Red Raiders to wrestle control of the Big 12 conference back as the season enters its home stretch.
Offensive Spark and Ground Game Dominance
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire made a bold decision to bench first-year starter Will Hammond in favor of the journeyman Castellanos. The offense had struggled in the bottom half of the Big 12 in total offense under Hammond, who threw six touchdowns and six interceptions against a relatively light schedule.
Castellanos made an immediate impact despite being a late roster addition following an injunction. He threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns while adding 117 yards and a score on the ground, becoming the first Texas Tech quarterback to rush for 100 yards since Tyler Shough. Seven of his carries resulted in first downs, including a pair of 20-yard gains.
The quarterback change drastically opened up the field for running back J’Koby Williams, who rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown. The Red Raiders totaled 328 rushing yards, marking the most surrendered by an Arizona defense since the 2020 season.
In the closing moments of the game, Castellanos orchestrated the final blow. Facing a third-and-one, he faked a read-option that collapsed the defense, allowing Williams to break away for a dramatic 64-yard touchdown run that sealed the win.
Challenges and Remaining Uncertainties
Despite the offensive explosion, Castellanos still faces notable limitations as a passer. He completed only 5 of 15 passes in the first half and finished 11 of 24 for the game, falling short of his career average completion rate of 58.5%.
Furthermore, Castellanos continues to play under a temporary injunction after previously losing eligibility when a prior injunction was dissolved. This leaves Texas Tech without complete certainty regarding his availability for the remainder of the season.
Nevertheless, the arrival of the experienced 30-game starter provides a vital offensive spark that instantly thrusts the Red Raiders back into serious contention for the Big 12 title race.
