James McClean and Derry City have mutually agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect following a contract dispute, though the player stated the club will always hold a special place in his heart. The 37-year-old player returned to his hometown team from Wrexham in January but had not featured in a matchday squad since July.
Contract Dispute and Resolution
Earlier in October, McClean publicly criticized an initial attempt by the League of Ireland club to end his agreement, calling the move “incomprehensible.” He described his exclusion from the team as one of the hardest challenges of his personal and professional life. However, BBC Sport reported that the club and McClean released a joint statement on Wednesday confirming they are satisfied with the final outcome and glad to move forward constructively.
McClean expressed happiness that both sides reached a resolution to settle the issues. He noted that although his comeback did not unfold as anticipated, Derry City remains very important to him. He thanked the supporters for their backing and wished the players, coaching staff, and fans success moving forward, while also offering good luck to the team ahead of the FAI Cup final against Waterford on November 8.
Club Tribute and Career Background
Derry City chairman Philip O’Doherty expressed gratitude to McClean for his commitment to his hometown team. O’Doherty noted that the player’s accomplishments stretch far past the Brandywell, highlighting his 103 senior appearances for the Republic of Ireland as an extraordinary milestone and formally recognizing his major impact on Irish football.
McClean began his senior career at Institute before transferring to Derry in 2008, where he spent three seasons prior to signing with Sunderland in 2011. He spent nearly 15 years playing in the English Football League and Premier League, representing clubs such as Wigan Athletic, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, and Wrexham before returning to Derry at the start of the year.
Derry City is set to visit Sligo Rovers on Friday for their last League of Ireland Premier Division fixture of the season before preparing for the cup showdown against Waterford at the Aviva Stadium.
