Neville Says Man Utd Should Sack Struggling Carrick

Gary Neville believes managers sometimes need to be dismissed for their own good as he discussed Manchester United’s decision to keep under-pressure manager Michael Carrick. United currently sit 16th in the Premier League standings, sitting only one point above the relegation zone following a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth.

Management Struggles and Squad Tensions

Although Carrick was widely anticipated to lose his job following the Bournemouth loss, the club decided to give the 45-year-old coach a chance to reverse their fortunes. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville stated that club officials likely debated the situation extensively before deciding to stick with him due to a lack of preparation, available replacements, and decision-making regarding potential candidates.

Drawing on his own experience, Neville added that he was relieved when Valencia ended his managerial stint, noting that coaches sometimes need to be put out of their misery. Carrick’s job security was already fragile prior to the Bournemouth match after team captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticized the team’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como. Fernandes was subsequently left out of the starting lineup against Bournemouth, though the manager and captain have since spoken to resolve the issue.

Neville noted that football dressing rooms are brutal environments and that public criticism from a captain is only a fraction of what players discuss internally, especially when key players like Fernandes have struggled for form over a three-month period. Following the Bournemouth defeat, supporters chanted Carrick’s name during what Neville described as a farewell lap, before booing the players as the manager walked down the tunnel.

Future Uncertainty at Old Trafford

Club leadership has looked into potential successors for Carrick, considering former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann. For now, Carrick remains in charge as the squad prepares for an away fixture against Chelsea, followed by home matches against Roma and Aston Villa ahead of the international break.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher expressed a similar sentiment to Neville, stating that Carrick likely wishes to be relieved of his duties rather than face the difficult task of addressing a squad that no longer supports him. Former United captain Roy Keane also weighed in on the situation, pointing out that the manager relies on the players more than they rely on him, and asserting that the players effectively control the direction of the club.
