Carson Hocevar faced heavy criticism from two NASCAR legends after appearing to brake-check Austin Cindric multiple times, causing race-ending damage to the No. 2 Team Penske Ford. The incident and the driver’s subsequent post-race remarks quickly drew the ire of 1999 NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Jarrett and newly inducted NASCAR Hall of Fame member Jeff Burton, who both work as analysts for NBC’s USA Sports broadcast.
Critiques of Hocevar’s Explanation
When asked about the clash, Hocevar played coy and stated he got lost for a second before adding that it was just Martinsville and they were simply having fun. Burton immediately rejected that reasoning as inadequate, emphasizing that professional drivers are responsible for maintaining control and cannot simply blame a loss of focus.
Jarrett echoed those sentiments, stating that such behavior has nothing to do with racing. He pointed out that drivers who pull such moves eventually find themselves isolated when they need help from peers to work their way up through the field. Burton noted that Hocevar and his team were struggling during the event and not running well, which likely fueled the driver’s high frustrations.
Past Controversies and Race Outcome
The difficult outing saw Hocevar finish 21st and two laps down, with rival teams also accusing him of intentionally spinning out during an earlier yellow flag period. Both analysts highlighted that Hocevar’s casual attitude following run-ins with fellow competitors is a recurring issue, noting they previously criticized him after a race at Darlington where he wrecked Brad Keselowski.
