Ryo Hirakawa described his first-ever taste of Formula 1 action during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend as a dream come true, after completing a productive FP1 session with Haas.
Assessing the Rookie Run
Hirakawa acknowledged that the lengthy run down to Turn 1 presented a significant mental challenge with numerous braking zones and cars surrounding him on all sides. He admitted that he left a substantial safety margin at the start because his primary objective was to finish the session and gather experience, noting that he wanted to learn as much as possible.
Following the initial launch, the Japanese driver focused on observing the techniques of fellow competitors. He described the opening stint as particularly difficult due to a lack of pace, but emphasized the valuable knowledge he gained throughout the run. His confidence grew noticeably after a Safety Car period once he fitted the C5 compound tires, allowing him to execute two overtakes and finish the outing on a positive note.
Future Plans and Uncertainties
Haas has not yet finalized their driver pairing for the upcoming race weekend in Brazil. Hirakawa’s availability remains uncertain as he was originally slated to compete for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship season finale, where the championship battle is still undecided.
Reflecting on what could potentially be his only Formula 1 appearance, Hirakawa stressed the importance of appreciating the experience. He stated that he simply needs to relish the moment and see what the future holds.
