A mass shooting outside Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, left one person dead and eight wounded following the annual Magic City Classic football game. The incident occurred on Saturday night amid a violent Halloween weekend that saw multiple shootings across nightlife districts in the United States.

The Birmingham Shooting

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin stated at a Sunday news conference that the gunfire erupted in two separate shootings just outside the stadium after the game. Fire officials reported that two of the wounded victims were in critical condition as of Sunday.

The annual rivalry game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M has a history spanning more than a century. Saturday’s contest drew nearly 70,000 spectators—ranking among the largest crowds for their division—with Alabama A&M securing a 31-28 victory.

Birmingham Police Department Chief Michael Pickett explained that the majority of families and spectators had already departed the stadium property when the violence occurred. The initial shooting took place nearby along Graymont Avenue where vendors had set up their stalls.

Authorities have not yet clarified the exact circumstances surrounding the shootings or determined where the fatality took place. Birmingham Police spokesperson De’Rell Freeman noted that one person had been detained and multiple weapons were recovered at the scene.

Broader Halloween Weekend Violence

The violence in Alabama mirrored similar tragedies in nightlife districts across the nation over the Halloween weekend. In Dallas, a series of shootings in the Deep Ellum neighborhood left four people dead and 15 others injured, according to police.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux mentioned that investigators were working to establish whether three separate Saturday night shootings within roughly an hour and fifteen minutes were connected, while the underlying motive remains unknown. Although some arrests were finalized, specific charges and arrest numbers were not disclosed by Comeaux, who described the territory as a very large and dispersed scene where local police presence had been heightened beforehand.

Additional nightlife district shootings were documented in college towns including Fayetteville, Arkansas; Newark, Delaware; and Bloomington, Illinois. Near the University of Delaware campus in Newark, six individuals sustained gunshot wounds late Saturday, while a separate incident early Sunday near Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington resulted in the death of a 19-year-old woman, critical injuries for another woman, and non-life-threatening injuries for six additional people.

In Fayetteville, an early Sunday shooting near the University of Arkansas sent six victims to hospitals with gunshot injuries. Police indicated via a news release that no arrests had been made yet, with preliminary findings suggesting an argument preceded the violence.

Store Attacks

Separate attacks also unfolded at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan on Friday. In Fairfield, California, a targeted shooting inside a store killed a 31-year-old pregnant woman, according to statements from family members to police, and wounded six others without any immediate arrests.

Meanwhile, in Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed Friday afternoon. Responding officers detained a suspect who was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by bystanders.
