Irish sport is mourning the loss of athletics legend Ciara Mageean, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 34 following a battle with cancer. Tributes poured in from across the sporting world, including a heartfelt message from LPGA professional Leona Maguire.
Emotional Tributes From Fellow Olympians
Maguire shared an emotional message on her Instagram story, writing, “Just heartbreaking. A legend in every sense of the word, gone too soon. The world is less bright today without Ciara’s smile ???? Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam ????.” The final phrase translates from Irish as a traditional blessing meaning “may her soul be at God’s right hand.”
Both Maguire and Mageean have represented Ireland on the international stage, with Maguire competing in golf across three Olympic Games in Rio, Tokyo, and Paris, while Mageean was a two-time Olympian in track and field.
A statement posted to Mageean’s Instagram account announced that she passed away at 6:30 am, surrounded by her loved ones. The statement described her as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend, and inspiration to many who will be deeply missed.
A Historic Career on the Track
Mageean’s crowning sporting achievement came in Rome in 2024, where she made history for Ireland by winning the European 1500m gold medal. She held Irish national records in the 800m, 1500m, and the mile, while also capturing a Commonwealth silver medal and becoming the first Irish woman to run the 800m in under two minutes in 2020.
Her path was later challenged by physical setbacks, including an Achilles tendon issue that kept her out of the Paris Olympics, followed by a diagnosis of stage four bowel cancer in May 2025 that had spread to her liver, lungs, and lymph nodes. She chose to share her diagnosis publicly in July.
Reflecting on her diagnosis during a June appearance on RTÉ Radio, Mageean expressed her determination to fit as much living into the years she had left. During her final year, she published a book titled “My Greatest Race” with Gill Books and served as a guest of honor at the Irish National Championships in July, where the athletics community hosted a special “Run with Ciara Mageean” event.
Community and Final Days
The impact of her loss extended far beyond athletics. The Camogie Association honored her memory, acknowledging her early background in camogie before she dedicated herself fully to running, while British Athletics praised her as a true inspiration on and off the track. Tributes also came from Athletics Ireland, which called her an inspirational figure, and First Minister Michelle O’Neill, who noted how her achievements brought immense pride to her local community and across Ireland.
Just weeks before her passing, Mageean married her long-term partner, Thomas Moran, at Belfast City Hall. Guided by the faith and family that meant a great deal to her throughout her life, she was surrounded by loved ones during her final moments.
While future Irish runners will eventually surpass her records on the track, the tributes from sports figures like Maguire emphasize that Mageean’s enduring legacy will be defined by her warmth, courage, and kindness.
