The Baltimore Ravens are turning to undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano as their starting quarterback for their Week 9 opening matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed the decision following injuries to both starter Lamar Jackson and primary backup Tyler Huntley.

Quarterback Injuries Force Lineup Change

Jackson suffered a right thumb injury during the team’s Week 8 game against the Buffalo Bills when he collided with pass rusher Greg Rousseau on the opening offensive snap. The injury required surgery, forcing Huntley into the game. However, Huntley suffered a turf toe injury, leaving the position empty and paving the way for Fagnano. As reported by CBS Sports Headlines, both Jackson and kicker Tyler Loop are expected to be placed on injured reserve before Thursday’s contest.

Speaking about the upcoming game, Minter expressed confidence in the team’s newest starter. “We’ll be starting Joe at quarterback this week on Thursday,” Minter said as reported by CBS Sports Headlines, adding, “An opportunity we’re fired up about. Excited to play in front of our fans Thursday night against a really good team.”

Rookie Opportunity and Preseason Success

Fagnano entered last week’s game under difficult circumstances, completing 10 of 21 pass attempts for 91 yards, an interception, and a lost fumble. The 25-year-old rookie joined Baltimore during the spring after going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft out of UConn, ultimately earning a spot on the 53-man roster over fellow undrafted rookie Diego Pavia.

Minter praised the young quarterback’s journey to the active roster. “Going all the way back, it’s a guy that took advantage of opportunities,” Minter said, noting that Fagnano earned his place through strong performances when injuries in training camp opened the door for extra repetitions. During the preseason, Fagnano completed 56 of 75 passes for 509 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

Ankle Injury Status

Despite earning the starting nod, Fagnano may not be operating at full health after appearing to injure his ankle during the loss to Buffalo. During Tuesday’s practice session, the quarterback was observed wearing a large brace on his right ankle.

When asked about his condition after practice, Fagnano downplayed the issue. “Good,” Fagnano stated as reported by CBS Sports Headlines. “Every game you got bumps and bruises. Just football. Physical game we play. Feels good, though.”
